  • CTX-M group 1 in birds, goats and water: One Health findings

A One Health study in the Kenyan Rift Valley found CTX-M group 1 genes in 14 of 79 screened bacterial isolates from migratory Little Stints, goats and water. All 13 bird and goat carriers were sampled in the pre-departure window, which points to local acquisition at shared freshwater hubs rather than import from the Arctic. The one water carrier came from an artesian borehole, not from the lake itself. Why this matters: ESBL-producing Enterobacterales beyond the clinic ESBL-producing Enterobacterales sit on the World Health Organization list of critical priority pathogens. ESBL stands for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase, the enzyme class that inactivates third-generation cephalosporins such as cefotaxime, ceftazidime and ceftriaxone, the workhorse…

  • Cutting Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Poultry Litter

Walk into a duck house on a dry-litter system and the floor looks like nothing much. Bedding, feathers, droppings, feed dust. It gets raked, topped up and mostly ignored until the next flock goes in. It is also one of the biggest reservoirs of resistance biology on the whole operation. A 2026 study that sequenced the virome of duck litter from four commercial farms has now put numbers on how much of that load you can strip out. Antibiotic resistance genes in poultry litter fell in a clean, repeatable order across four management groups, and the group that came out best is not the one most people would put money…

  • Lsa(F) Gene: The New Antibiotic Resistance Threat Hiding in Farm and Food Bacteria

Antimicrobial resistance is a slow-moving crisis that rarely makes the news until something breaks. The famous names get the attention: MRSA, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales, the last-resort drugs we keep burning through. But resistance doesn’t appear from nowhere. It shows up one gene at a time, usually in the places nobody is watching, like the bacteria living in pigs, in dairy fermentations, in the ordinary background of animal agriculture. A newly characterized gene fits that pattern. It’s called Lsa(F), and it belongs to a family of proteins that shield bacterial ribosomes from antibiotics. What makes it worth a closer look is the combination of what it resists, where it lives, and how…
